Elevator Retrofitting Projects
Project Overview
Location
Xiangzhou District,
Zhuhai, Guangdong, China
Project Type
Existing Building Elevator Retrofitting
Beijing Institute of Technology,
Zhuhai Campus

During the 2019 summer break, BIT Zhuhai invested RMB 80+ million to install 116 elevators across all campus buildings — becoming China’s first university to complete a campus-wide retrofit in one phase and the largest single-site project of its kind.
The project had to be completed within 52 days before the fall semester. KXD and Yijiati faced complex challenges — utility relocation, foundation work, building modifications, and site restoration — far more demanding than new installations.
The teams developed a meticulous plan, surveyed all 116 entrances, and employed modular prefabrication with on-site hoisting. Despite Zhuhai’s hot, humid summer and typhoon season, they worked extended hours to meet the deadline.
The first steel shafts reached hoisting in just 25 days. The project was delivered on schedule before the semester started. University leadership visited multiple times and praised the teams’ professionalism. The success demonstrated KXD and Yijiati’s capability and established a national benchmark for campus-wide elevator retrofits.
- 116 elevators in 52 days — national university record for scale and speed
- KXD and Yijiati collaboration — modular prefabrication + integral hoisting — on-time delivery despite severe weather
- Covering teaching, dormitory, and apartment buildings — national campus and large-site retrofit benchmark
